An essential skills visa is granted to applicants who have a job offer from a New Zealand employer. The employer must normally demonstrate that they have made genuine attempts to recruit New Zealanders but have been unable to find a New Zealand citizen or resident who was suitable for the role offered.

- The remuneration offered must be at least $21.25 per hour to be granted a visa longer than 1 year
